Carroll Shelby’s story is a long and storied one which was recently made into a movie featuring Matt Damon and Christian Bale called Ford vs Ferrari. Shelby’s success at Le Mans for Ford was miraculous and he ended up returning to the States to experiment on Ford’s Mustang by doing what he does best: stuffing bigger engines into just about anything he can get his hands on.
Two of the cars he experimented with were known as Green Hornet and Little Red, which were thought to have been lost but recovered under the direction of Craig Jackson, CEO of Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, and restored to their former glory.
In the process of the restoration, sheet metal from the original cars was given to REC Watches in order to create these limited edition timepieces with clear references to the Mustang’s themselves.
The 42mm watch targets both watch aficionados and fans of the Mustang alike, not coming across as too kitsch yet clearly influenced by the car details.
The Swiss made watch uses a self-winding Swiss Technology Production STP2-12-13 Type Mechanical lever movement. It’s in the face where the sheet metal resides, handcrafted and cut directly from the sheet metal provided. The references are everywhere such as the grey calf leather strap draws upon the classic Mustang seats with a ribbed texture.
There are differences between the two in the design, notably in the “power reserve” dial and graphics.
